From 15:30 to 17:00 on 29 March 2023, Henk van Rinsum gave a lecture on the colonial past of Utrecht University.\u00a0The title of his lecture is \u2018Sol Iustitiae en de Buitengewesten, 1636-2000\u2019. In an\u00a0article in DUB\u00a0external link<\/a>, Henk van Rinsum argued\u00a0for broadening research on the University’s slavery past to the University’s colonial past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this lecture, Henk took a focused look at the colonial past – and the slavery past as its extension – in relation to academic development at the university. His theoretical and historical account is essential for placing the past in a new perspective and learning from it. This inspiring afternoon offered a look at both the past and the future of the university – including the social sciences – in the field of international cooperation, diversity and inclusion.
The lecture took place in the conservatory (‘Serre’) of the Botanical Gardens – a uniquely ‘colonial’ site and was concluded with drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
